NEWS :
Far Rockaway organizer Khaleel Anderson has won an open seat in Southeast Queens’ Assembly District 31, becoming the youngest Black state lawmaker in New York history.
Anderson, 24, received about 89 percent of the in-person vote with 99 percent of the ballots tallied in District 31, according to New York City Board of Elections results. The district includes a portion of Southeast Queens near JFK Airport, South Ozone Park and the Eastern portion of the Rockaway Peninsula.
The Republican candidate, Joseph Cullina, received about 11 percent of the vote.
Anderson said he was “honored” to become the youngest Black candidate elected to state office and the third youngest person ever elected to the state Assembly. Future President Theodore Roosevelt won a Manhattan assembly district at 23 in 1881. Assemblymember Richard Gottfried was also 23 when he won his Manhattan seat in 1970.

COVID-19 Relief Effort
The Pandemic is killing us. The first covid-19 diagnosis? In Far Rockaway. And you know why? We don’t have equal health care. We don’t get quality care. And many of us-even now-get no care. They say stay home. But most of us can’t. Many of us have essential jobs that can’t be done at home. And we have to work to pay the landlord and to buy food. Every one of us can honor the memories of the many we have lost by supporting the Mutual Aid Network of Southeast Queens and The Rockaways. Twice weekly our teams of volunteers deliver grocery and ppe supplies to our seniors and the vulnerable in our community. And we know we can do more. We’re fighting, raising our voices as loud as we can, to tell the powerful the truth they must hear. Southeast Queens and The Rockaways demand more covid-10 testing sites. We demand critical income support for everyone who’s been told to stay home and not go to work, especially those who might even think they are unemployment insurance ineligible. Hazard pay for each of our essential worker neighbors is what we deserve. It’s not the best time to ask for contributions We know that. But we also know the oppression that made sure the first Covid-19 diagnosis would be here in our neighborhoods must end! And that only we, united, loud-maybe hurting-but strong, can stop the pain. Please contact us for more info on how to volunteer or contribute.
